I'm so
thrilled. The director of technology had emailed bm the regional
and national competition dates. Naturally bm didn't inform us.
We just
learned the date from the same director - YAY!!! It's during ss's time
with dad.
So many
students are missing meetings, and not emailing test answers as
required, and ss is on time with all test answers and attending
meetings when he can, there could be a chance he'll be chosen to
represent his school at competitions and despite bm's best efforts -
he'll be free to go!!!! YAY!
I keep
trying to help the kids see the value of persistence, working on what
is within your control despite what someone else is doing. Here's
another example!

1/30/2001
He attended all meetings he could, turned in tests on time,
participated...
And just received the email that out of 20 kids he's been selected to
be on the team!
*doing the proud stepmom dance*
He'll be going to Los Angeles competition, then competition in
Florida. YAY!!!!

2/1/2001, "Early yesterday evening bm called while all kids were downstairs. My
daughter answered on the kids' line downstairs, and handed it to ss.
I heard him tell her how exhausting it is doing all the homework
we're making him do. Then the next 10 minutes he spoke in whispers while
the girls and I socialized not hearing what was said.
I know she tries to convince him how terrible we are to make him
participate in Robotics, for instance.
I watched Drew Carey last night, and just emailed this to our kids:
"Last night on Drew Carey's show, he was having to work as a
cafeteria server at his old high school. Old high school friends showed
up, who are much more successful than Drew.
At home that night he hid under the backyard pool table bemoaning his
fate. His good friends rescued him.
In his home, he was trying to figure out what went wrong with his
life.
In flashbacks Drew was a nerd in high school, always getting picked
on by kids.
One day his female friend in the show wasn't paying attention in high
school to Drew asking if his new thick glasses were good or if he should
get contacts. She said his glasses were sexy without realizing what she
was saying, and ever after Drew wore the glasses.
His tall male friend started him drinking beer in high school.
His goony male friend in high school ruined Drew's college
application to MIT, made up a new one, and Drew was not admitted.
Drew thought about it and realized none of those could've ruined his
life cuz he could have gone ahead and gotten contacts some day, wasn't
willing to give up beer, and could have submitted college applications
to other colleges, but didn't.
He thought some more. He remembered getting hugs and comfort from the
pretty blond nurse after every little thing that happened all thru high
school.
With horror he realized, "I'm a PITY WHORE!!!" He said he
loved the attention of the school nurse, and still seeks the attention
of others' pity. And that's what has held him back in life.
He told his friends to stop giving him pity. He tested them by
stepping outside and pretending to hurt himself. His friends didn't run
out to offer him pity.

Which do you want? Your life, or others' pity?
I wonder if ss will make the connection.
